Are All Calories Created Equal? Are 100 calories from soda the same as 100 calories from broccoli? A calorie is a calorie, right? The answer to both of these questions is no. There are definite differences between calories of different foods. A person that takes in 2000 calories of soda a day is going to gain a lot more weight than someone that takes in 2000 calories a day of broccoli. InsulinKnowing how to work with insulin is considered the most important part of the weight loss diet. Some people are more insulin resistant than others. The key point is to never spike the sugar in your blood because that will spike the insulin. What does insulin do? It takes sugars and stores them as fat. The more sugary foods you eat the more fat will be stored on the body. The other factor is that insulin spikes will rebound and cause hunger pains to make you eat and bring your blood sugar back up. People tend to overeat sweet foods and sweet foods increase appetite. How many people do you know that can't stop eating too many leafy greens? Have you ever had a hard time saying no to cookies, ice cream, or soda? Researchers are finding that a low glycemic index diet is the most effective. Find a diabetic diet and stick to it. The pounds will certainly come off. Why do low GI diets restrict carbohydrates? It's because carbohydrates much more readily turn into sugar and that tends to spike insulin. One other way to regulate insulin is to eat fish. Fish has a way of making the body more sensitive to insulin and other hormones that control appetite. Most all of the leanest nations eat a diet of fish and rice. What Calories Are the Best?Since fish helps turn hunger off, it is on the to top of the list. Typically vegetables are also great because they are complex and will take the longest to break down into sugar. The next best are fruits and meat and dairy. The worst calories turn into sugar quickly. The worst products to eat are refined white flour, table sugar, and high fructose corn syrup. They all spike the insulin. Diet FoodsMost diet foods are known for tasting great with low calories. For example, Diet Coke tastes really sweet and has no calories. What is the problem here? These products taste really sweet and that means they spike your insulin. Another annoying thing about diet foods is that the additives are known to disrupt satiety and metabolism. Think of it this way. Diet foods that taste great with no calories are really a way of cheating. Unfortunately the cheating doesn't pay off. Caloric ScienceAccording to the First Law of Thermodynamics, it says that the energy going in must then be burned out on the other side to create equilibrium. This statement is definitely true. However, this law applies to a closed system and the human body is bombarded with many external stimuli.According to the Second Law of Thermodaynamics, entropic states occur and objects tend to move towards equilibrium. For example, hot rocks thrown into a water bucket will heat the water and cool the rocks until water and rocks are of the same temperature. The Second Law shows us that various foods will react with the body to create equilibrium. Foods that are of low quality will have a different equilibrium than those of high quality. To raise the standard of your body, raise the standard of your foods. |
