Healthy Weight PyramidThe Mayo Clinic came out with a food pyramid to help you lose weight and to maintain a lean body. The pyramid has fruits and vegetables on the bottom tier and you can eat unlimited amounts because are filling, nutrient dense, and low calorie. The next category is carbohydrates. You should eat 4-8 servings of carbohydrates daily. The next category going up is dairy and protein. You should have 3-7 servings of protein and dairy. The next highest are fats and you should have 3-5 servings daily. The highest and smallest area to be consumed is sweets and the maximum amount of sweets you can eat is 75 calories per day. This healthy weight pyramid is far superior to other pyramids I have seen. It makes the important step of severely restricting sweets. It also encourages the consumption of vegetables and fruits. This is great because eating a lot of low caloric foods is a proven way to lose weight. It is also the healthiest because of the nutrient density. Past pyramids have confused encouraged overconsumption of grains. As you may know, people don't directly consume grains. They do it with breads, pastries, and processed cereals. All of these items have added sugars, some are deep fried, and there is often little fiber. It is well known to animal producers that a grain diet is a great way to fatten up their animals.
